As part of Levi’s Station to Station tour, Floating Point Collective was comissioned to transform four antique objects into web-enabled digital devices.
We created the following objects:
A Typewriter (1901 Underwood No.5) that posts to Twitter
A Guitar (1953 Gibson E-125) that posts to Soundcloud
A Still Camera (1939 Graflex) that posts to Instagram
A Video Camera (1953 Bolex B8) that posts to Instagram
TECH: Each device communicated with a web interface. We chose the Raspberry Pi as the brain inside each object. For the cameras, we used the Raspberry Pi camera module and programmed everything in Python. Each device had a built-in WIFI module, and we used mobile hot spots to communicate with the web as the train traveled across the country.
Each device is outfitted with an RFID reader, and RFID bracelets were worn by artists and musicians on the train to log in to their own accounts.
